Taking it further...

With Mrs. Sparsits Metaphorical staircase, Can the same staircase can be applied to the other character's in the novel? And if so what is their "Abyss" at the bottom staircase -rather realization or truth they have discovered?- For Louisa her "Abyss" was the realization that she had to derive Love from a Horrible Mr. Harthouse inorder to understand that she should've derived her Love from where it matters most: Home.

  1. I think that this idea of the metaphorical staircase is important and therefore could be traced back to other characters in the novel. I think we see this with Bounderby losing Louisa as a consequence of disrespecting and constraining her throughout her life. This we can also see this action of falling toward the abyss at the bottom of the staircase with Tom through his reaction to Coketown's restraints include drinking and gambling a perfect way for Dickens to illustrate another form of this downward spiraling staircase that so many of the characters represent.
